Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re (TSMMR)

@ Anime Weekend Atlanta

20-Sept-2008

Played in between The Emeralds and The Captains.

My husband and I have started going to Anime/Comics/SciFi conventions lately.  We went to Dragon Con and then decided to go to Anime Weekend Atlanta.  While walking through the booths, we saw the musical groups (all J-Pop) playing at AWA's concert.  TSMMR stood out because they were all girls and their flyer said they were rock, ska, indie, and avant garde.  It sounded interesting so we went.

TSMMR rocked!  That's all I can say.  They seemed so unassuming with leggings, t-shirts, & colorful sneakers, but once they started playing, you couldn't help but be blown away.

The bassist was wearing this faded black t-shirt with LOVE on it and a skirt that went to her knees, plus leggings, and crazy hi-tops.  Her bass was slung low across her hips and her hair was in a messy curly side ponytail with a scrunchie.  My favorite bass players are Carlos D from Interpol and Corrine Lee from Snowden.  They may not be the most technical musicians, but they have presence.  Well, TSMMR's bass player also had presence as she rocked, kicked, jumped, and jammed around the boring platform hotel stage.  By the end, she was drenched and her ponytail had fallen out, but she was still smiling.

The lead singer did most of the talking.  Her English was passable (exceptional considering most of us can't speak Japanese).  She'd tell us stories about each song and who/what it was for.  Example, "This one is for my EX-Boyfriend," she explained with false hatred, then proceeded to sing a song that repeated the word, "Baka," over and over again.  I don't know much Japanese, but I know stupid when I hear it.  She jumped into the crowd while still playing her guitar and juxtaposed light and cheery tea songs with devil inflected throat grunts.  She was engaging and made everyone fall in love with her.

The drummer was the least memorable, but probably because she wasn't that big and hidden behind her kit.  But, we did get to see her when they talked about their deal and obsession with PowerPuff Girls.  The drummer likes the Yellow One.

TSMMR's albums are on iTunes and under $8.00.  Much better deal than the $20 I paid after the show when I didn't think iTunes would carry the import.
