I have mentioned
this list before in previous blog entries so I figured it was time to
let you know what I was talking about. When you have a lot of music to
choose from each day, it's hard to narrow down favorites. For me, my
favorites constantly change because they match my moods. I may love an
album for a month straight and not listen to it again for a year. I'm
not a fickle music person; it's just I get preoccupied with finding the
next awe inspiring thing.
Sade - Kiss of Life
I love Sade. Her voice is smooth and sensual, and her words are
poetry. This song makes me sentimental. It was the song playing
during my first kiss with my husband, and it was our first dance song
at our wedding. Yes, I know that is mushy, but the way he loves me
makes me know, "There must have been an angel by my side, something
heavenly led me to you."
Snowden - Black Eyes (Le Castle Vania remix)
I was in denial of Snowden. I did not believe a group like them could
originate from Atlanta. I know, how pretentious am I? My sister had
given me their Anti-Anti album awhile ago and finally this year I
decided to listen after she kept saying how good they were. They have
since taken the 3rd spot in my favorite bands list. This is my
favorite song by them and the Le Castle Vania remix of it makes it
absolutely perfect. I could loop the third verse alone forever:
and you looked dark and pensive
as your heels hit the floor to the blaring Division
but you didn't have much to say
but you were beautiful anyway
I hope I'm never accused of being vapid with nothing inside =)
New Order - Ceremony
Just listen to the first minute of the song and you know why it's on
this list. This song is more about the music than the lyrics for me.
Actually I don't even hear words when I hear this song. I only hear
the music.
The Cure - Halo
There are many favorite Cure songs and it was hard to choose one that
really made me feel something, but this one does. It's one of the more
cheery Cure songs and Robert Smith does great sad and great love
songs. It's an innocent love song, clear in its message, and it makes
me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I smile when I hear it.
Bloc Party - The Pioneers
I love this song because it makes you check yourself. We can't let our
egos make us complacent or arrogant. We can't make false promises. In
the end, "we will not be the last" to deal with whatever problems exist
right now. We have to keep forging on to try and be better, but not
waste time "reinventing the wheel". We need to learn and adapt.
The Clash - Lost in the Supermarket
Growing
up, all I heard about The Clash was "Rock the Casbah" or "Should I Stay
or Should I Go." Then unbeknownst to me, I fell in love with Big Audio
Dynamite II when I was 12. I came back to The Clash later and heard
this song. To me, it's the bridge that takes me to BADII. It's
beautiful and melodic and who doesn't feel lost looking for yourself at
times?
Queen - Under Pressure
Yes, I know it's David Bowie and Queen. I also know how my youth was
scarred by Vanilla Ice's shameless lies that he did NOT sample this
song. Not only do I love the song's lyrics, I love how well Freddie
and David blend together. Two very different voices, yet cohesive on
one great song. Plus, Freddie Mercury was so talented.
Interpol - Say Hello to Angels
When
I got my first Mac in 2003, I remember being so excited about iTunes.
I found Interpol by tirelessly looking at the "Listeners Also Bought"
section because it was so much easier to find music. I bought TOTBL
and it was LOVE at first listen. Since then, I have seen them 7x, have
watched practically every YouTube interview, and have an obsession with
Carlos D (yes, my husband knows...much to my chagrin). This was my
first favorite song by them, so it makes the list...I just wasn't sure
if I wanted to hear about Stella forever.
The Knife - Heartbeats (Live)
Has
a song ever grabbed you at first listen? Again, I attribute this to my
sister. She had it on her myspace page one day and BAM, I was like
what is this? I like the live version more than the studio version or
Jose Gonzalez's cover, but any version is great. The live version just
has a more hypnotic feel. Strangely, I couldn't get into The Knife's
other work...or their masked faces.
Snow Patrol - You Could Be Happy
The
perfect melancholy of regret and heartbreak. Knowing you still love
someone, but they are now gone probably because of you, yet, you love
them enough to hope they're happy. Even if that happiness means they
spend their life away from you.
Or so you tell yourself that you can live without them. He sings as if he is trying to convince himself that it will be all right and he wants her to be happy, but there is a tinge of sorrow so fresh in his voice that you feel he could break down any minute. The song builds at the end as he sets her free and tells her to Go Live, but then the song ends abruptly. It feels unfinished and tentative, like his future without her
