I'm not a celebrity, I'm not a "genre" twitter account, I'm not an expert at anything, nor am I super funny, perverse, or witty. Yet, I have almost 200 people who are currently following me. There have been more, but obviously they figured out I am a fraud and stopped following, but for the ones that stay...why?
I am not complaining. I think it's flattering that someone would even care enough to read to my 140 character random thoughts.
Gems like:
"My cat snores loud"
"I <3 Vampire Knight"
"My sushi roll looks like a duck, not a dragon"
I follow over 250 people and some are VERY interesting. And I don't take anything personally if someone stops following me. We all want our stream to be filled with things that are interesting. I have never deluded myself into thinking I rank amongst those with thousands or millions of followers.
But, I still wonder the methods people use to follow me.
Here's some ideas:
1>Bots - random search engines that auto follow anyone who mentions something
"I hate Katy Perry" --> 2-Min later, @katyperryfanclub is following me. That's a fake account of course, but nonetheless, these bots make no sense to me. They usually get spammed out by Twitter.
2>I randomly say something that makes someone think that is my schtick
"How expensive would it be to find shoes for a centipede? I wonder if Tom's Shoes could help out?" -->1-day later, @tomsshoes is following me (again fake account, using for dramatization purposes only). They are a legit company doing good work in the world. I feel guilty for even mentioning them jokingly.
3>Twitter 3rd Party Apps - These apps use algorithms and word profiling to find people you should be following. I actually followed a random person that way and she followed me back. So far so good, but I still have no idea why the app thought we should follow each other in the first place
4>Legitimate interests - The real beauty of Twitter
I like Twilight and find someone else who likes Twilight who then has other friends, etc
I like music and find a good music blogger who has other followers that are RTed and I check them out and end up following those people who follow back, or vice versa
I love SYTYCD and follow people I find in #trends or from blogs with a Twitter address and they follow back
5>Random followers who you'll never know why they follow because they never respond yet never unfollow you. Do they even read my stuff? I don't know, but as long as it isn't weird, I don't do anything and hope I never provoke anyone negatively
6>#followfriday - I don't usually like it because it clogs up the stream, but occasionally find some cool people from it. I had my first inclusion last week, and was surprisingly even more flattered than normal follows because someone cared enough to choose me. It's a weird popularity contest that violates the no walls Twitter world, but it's only one day, so I accept it.
Happy Following everyone.
