My devotion started after my birthday last August when I received the books as gifts. I had been living under an oblivious rock before that. The last book, Breaking Dawn was being released and I saw the promotional stuff at all stores. I saw Facebook buttons about Edward kicking Angel & Spike's asses, or even Chuck Norris'. I started paying attention to media reports about the movie still in production. Me being a person who knows their own fascination with Vampires, I was intrigued and couldn't ignore it any longer. I put the series on my Amazon wish list and the rest is history.
While reading the books (multiple times) or listening to the audiobooks in the car (YES I did do all of this...don't judge me!), I would start to listen to music and find myself relating songs to feelings I'd have when I read the story. From that came the urgent need to make a playlist. At first it was going to be one playlist per book, but in the end it became three separate feelings that resonated throughout the series.
~CONFLICTED~
~HEARTBREAK~
~LOVE~
~HEARTBREAK~
~LOVE~
------------------------------------------------------------------
CONFLICTED
So much of the series is about inner turmoil, struggle, and life altering decisions. For that reason, this is my favorite of the three playlists because questions and doubts are what gives us our humanity. It's not about the destination; it's about the journey. It's knowing what someone went through to be happy. Everyone wants to be happy and we all fight life to ensure we find our own peace. The characters of Twilight are no different, regardless if they aren't all human.
HEARTBREAK
There is some serious heartbreak in this series. I think it also cuts even deeper if you have known heartbreak in your own life. I will say the way Stephenie wrote New Moon angered me at first because I lost all that made me love the book and I cried over every word and those single four blank pages with the months displayed. That emptiness made me feel empty and like Bella, it was really hard to move on. It took a second read to appreciate New Moon. What kind of story leaves Edward absent for 376 pages? But, he never really left. However, we needed that pain to understand the love. I know in real life, going back to someone who broke my heart never ended well, but they weren't Edward so her choices make sense. Because pain is so universal, this playlist is the longest.
LOVE
This one is easy...when there is a love that bonds two people together, nothing can break them apart. They make misguided choices thinking they are doing what's best for each other, but it's because they love so much they think they are protecting one another. They forgive and compromise. They find balance and strength. They nurture each other and become more complete; never knowing they were previously fractured. They simply Love.

I love your obsession and I'm jealous because I love LOVING something that much. I think the story is brilliant. I love the conflicts too. I love that it's about young love. I still watch Footloose yearly. I'll always love Ren. :) He's my Edward! Ha ha!!! Ooooh, Kevin Bacon would have been such a GOOD Edward in his youth!!!! Even now, he should totally play a vampire. He should have been in Interview with the Vampire!
and I LOVE the idea of making a playlist for a book! That's brilliant Diane!
I make playlists anytime I feel inspired (why I have so many). They are snippets of my life at a time and I name them appropriately so I can easily recall what I was doing at the time.
I made another playlist for a "book". It was for Twilight fanfiction, called Wide Awake. It's been said to be the book Stephenie Meyers should have written...ouch. It's total alternate universe, but sooooo good. Here's the link if you're ever interested: http://angstgoddess003.livejournal.com/
Oh my God Diane! Wow. This is awesome! I love everything that you wrote. And every word of it is so true. I've heard certain songs that would remind me of the books, but this is incredible! I think my jaw dropped when I started reading it...I love it!
PS. Just lastnight I was thinking that I should get the audio (since the darn ad pops up 24/7 on FB-how could I not want it!) and just listen to it whenever I felt like it, just because I can!
Tiffany,
Thanks so much for your kind words.
(Don't tell anyone, but I got the audiobooks off of bit torrent; otherwise, they're pretty pricey compared to the books - hint hint). They're a little weird because it's all narrated by a girl, but you forget that after a while.
You art is in painting, mine is writing, music appreciation, & dance. =)
Diane
