Scott Pilgrim vs. Knives Chau

I'll admit that I am late on the Scott Pilgrim bandwagon.  I am a manga reader so I usually don't know the cool comics/graphic novels that become popular.  However, when I saw the trailer for the movie a few months before the movie came out I was instantly intrigued.  I'll admit...I am a Michael Cera fan.  I know a lot of people are sick of nerd awkward persona, but I still dig it.  Maybe his "nerdspeak" speaks to people like me.

So, while I was hyped for the movie and understood its premise, I didn't do much research like reading the comics (although the set is now saved on my Amazon wish-list with the Highest priority...Got that people?).  I didn't know who the seven evil exes were or even who else was in the movie beyond what I saw in the trailer.

I saw the movie last weekend and I loved it.  It was weird and quirky and over-the-top.  My husband said it'll probably be a cult classic type movie.  I am guessing that will be true considering it kinda tanked by industry standards.  I don't care...I LOVED IT.

But, here's where this entry moves to my new favorite character...KNIVES CHAU.  --> Come with me to learn more. =)

**SPOILER ALERT**
-----------------------------
Meet Knives Chau

Who is Knives? Well, she's Scott Pilgrim's high school uber innocent girlfriend.  She's an Asian girl who goes to Catholic Shool and has never been kissed, nor can stay out after dark.  She's pretty much a goofy teen girl.

Why do I like her? Well, the first obvious reason...she's Asian.  I get happy when Asian characters get to play in real movies and it's not as a refugee or doctor.  Yes, she's got some stereotypes like she's good at Ninja Ninja Revolution and has strict parents, but she's also so dorkily funny and enamored with her new boyfriend.

She's your typical teenager that takes everything too seriously and overreacts about the most normal of things.  She tries too hard to impress, and therefore, makes herself seem so desperate.  I actually love that about her.  For example, when she first hears Scott's band, Sex Bob-Omb play, she is mesmerized by them and becomes their number one fan...their only fan, but who's counting.

She goes to see them play and gets so excited that she passes out and doesn't realize that Scott has eyes for another girl, Ramona (hear the scathing way I say that...as Knives).  Then she has to go and tell him she loves him, which is followed up with a break-up (including perfect warped version of Broken Social Scene's Anthem's for a Seventeen Year Old Girl playing in the background).  And teenage scorn is so fun.  She dyes her hair the same color as Scott's new flame and says mean things...as all teenagers would.  Her over-the-top psycho behavior is hilarious.  My favorite line regarding Knives is when she attempts to help Scott defeat an ex and is struck by the ex.  She gets hit so hard that it "knocked the highlights off of her hair."  And her blue hair made me want to have my blue hair again.

In the climax battle of the movie, Knives comes ready to battle.

She's not afraid to fight a boy...even her own Ex.

In the end, all works out and Knives learns that first heartbreak isn't so bad.  She knows she'll find someone better than Scott Pilgrim.

So, why am I telling you all this?  Well, Dragon*Con is coming up in 10-Days and I've decided to dedicate one costumed day being Knives Chau.

WHY?
  1. She's Asian (we already discussed this) and I too am Asian
  2. My hair is almost the same as her...close enough (Haircut scheduled tomorrow so maybe I'll tweak it for this time around. It grows fast.)
  3. It's an all black outfit with easy to wear shoes (always a Cosplay plus)
  4. She's a kick-ass character that reminds me of me as a teenager...in two words: LAME EXUBERANCE

I hope I do her justice and of course I'll take pictures of the outfit.

Wish me luck!
