There actually is good stuff on the interwebz! Who knew?

For this blog entry, the life I want is "Beyonce" (not "her" but her as a metaphor).
I may be trying to emulate it, but failing miserably because I haven't taken the
time to actually become "Beyonce".  However, I am willing and able to be a
better "Beyonce" than Beyonce. I know it's possible.

So in the past few weeks I have started to take an interest in the internet again.  And no, I don't mean, "wow, the internet is a series of tubes and oh look, the guy who said it is now dead because I read it online at a big corporation's website."  I mean, that I've been trying to branch out of from my comfortable social networking and see what people are writing about or posting.  I also don't mean my piddly blog or someone's tumblr where they're just copy/pasting someone else's pictures and call it a blog.  I don't even really mean a fan site blog run by normal fans.

Disclaimer - There are a lot of awesomesauce blogs out that do what
I've mentioned, but for sake of this blog entry, we are ignoring them
because I want to talk about a different kind of internet site

The interwebz that I want to get to know again is the place where creativity is born. I want to find the places where people have found ways to make a living doing EXACTLY what they want in a creative manner.  Call it motivation or inspiration to me, but I look up to ANYONE who has found the courage to leave the mundane and do their passion.

Maybe I am having a "mid-life" crisis (I did just recently celebrate another birthday; one which placed me into the next box on "check your age range" on surveys).  Or maybe it's an awakening.  I have a choice to make in a few years and it comes down to "what do I want to do with my life?" I know it's not what I am currently doing; however, do you ever feel like you don't have the talent or gumption to do what you truly love for fear that you're not going to be successful doing it? I have that fear all the time.  I hope that by seeing examples of other people being successful doing what they love, I will find the courage to do that as well.

Come see some blogs I like -->

BLOG 1 =  The Oatmeal
This is a fairly well known and popular humor blog.  I would read it occasionally when someone would link from it, but I didn't subscribe to it until recently (and followed on Twitter).  Here's the cartoon that did me in:

Why working at home is both awesome and horrible

Some snippets from it:

Awesome
The Oatmeal-alarm clock.pngThe above one is SO me

HORRIBLE
The Oatmeal-socialskills.png
TheOatmeal - distractions.pngThere's more where that came from at the blog.

And being the "I wish everyone knew how to write" snob that I am,
I'd love to own this The Oatmeal - Grammar Poster 4-Pack

BLOG 2 = Hyperbole and a Half
I was fortunate enough to find this blog today (and it's the inspiration for me wanting to blog right now).  It started with a silly cat video, but as I browsed the blog further, I found a lot of things I could relate to.

What I like about her style is she incorporates a humorous inner monologue of insecurities, absurd fears, and peeves seamlessly amongst these quirky drawings.  She doesn't take herself too seriously, yet makes jokes at her own expense and is a bit snarky without being mean or disrespectful.  I can relate to her and for that I have subscribed to her blog/twitter/youtube accounts (no, I am not a stalker).

The most recent post:
shootingstarlong.pngI urge you to go read this post on her blog because the commentary with it is just as funny.

She posted in her FAQs section that she has made this her full time job as of Apr-2010 and says it's the first time she's loved a job.  I want that feeling too...just need to find that thing I love and can "do" as a living.

I also decided to follow her on Twitter.

BLOG 3 = The Life Pursuit - with San Smith
I found this blog very recently too.  She's a local artist in Atlanta and I found her Twitter after we both responded to
a Criminal Records pic showing the Kid Robot DJ Lance Rock's special edition Dunny.  What drew me to her was her fabulous pink hair. And then I found this in her FAQs section regarding previous colors/cuts:

She is my hair icon, for reals

Anyways, so San Smith is NOT a cartoonist like the above two blogs, but she is a graphic designer turned full time illustrator/artist and her work is based on animation, comics, or mixed media art. She too has found a way to be a full time artist and knowing how she did it makes me see that she is a smart girl who went after what she really wanted with a plan, not just a basket full of hopes and dreams.

She blogs about what she's working or or what inspires her.  She also uses herself to model new merchandise, such as hair flowers or strawberries.

As I went through her blog I thought a few things:
  1. She is adorable and I love her hair
  2. Her room/studio is a room/studio I want to be in.  I see so many things in the background that just catch my eye and make me say "want".
  3. She is young, yet went for her dreams and it's paid off
  4. I emailed her to ask if she sold her stuff at Cons and she replied same day.  I love that. (Answer: No cons yet, but will be participating at an Indie Craft Fair & sells her stuff at etsy)

BLOG 4 = Meg Urbani Photography
Meg is my Twitter friend.  We met through a love of Twilight and Twi-Fanfic, but at this point, I consider her a real friend and I am in awe of her talent.  She is a fashion photographer in the NY area.  She is also a musician and can bake a mean cupcake.

The things I love about Meg:
  1. She is talented yet doesn't throw that in your face.  She lets the work speak for itself.
  2. She is so cool and the kind of girl you want to have on your side because she's not "trying" to project an image...she IS that image.
  3. Underneath it all, she's sweet and I'm happy to have her as my friend.
Well, I'd show you some examples of her work here, but she's got the pics on lockdown (with good reason to protect them against the likes of me), so you'll just have to go to the link and check them out.

Here's her store so go support her and buy some stuff --> Act Like a Lady!

I can't wait for Meg to blow up so I can say I know a famous fashion photog. =)
---------------------------------------

So in the end, the internet continues to be a place where good things can happen to people who strive to achieve their dreams.  I guess the next step for me is to figure out what I really want to be when I grow up.
